Link in bio basics

What is a link in bio?

By NoizPublished 4 min read

The short answer

A link in bio is the clickable web address in the bio section of a social profile. Most apps allow only one link there, or a handful, so creators point it at a single page that lists everything else: their other profiles, the latest release or video, a shop and a way to get in touch. That page is called a link-in-bio page.

Where the phrase comes from

"Link in bio" started on Instagram. The app has long kept web addresses in post captions from being clickable, so a creator who wanted to send people somewhere wrote "link in bio" under the post. The link itself sat on their profile, in the one spot the app did make clickable.

The phrase stuck, and it spread to every platform with the same limit. Today it means two things: the link on your profile, and the page that link opens.

Because most creators have more than one thing worth linking, and the profile has room for very little. Instagram lets you add up to five links. TikTok gives you one, and only once you meet its conditions (see how to add a link to your TikTok bio). Your new video, your other profiles, your merch and your Discord server all compete for that space.

There is a quieter problem too. If your profile link goes straight to your newest video, every older post that said "link in bio" now points at the wrong thing. A link-in-bio page fixes that: the address on your profile never changes, and you change what the page shows.

The pages that work share a shape. They say who you are in one line, put the one thing you want people to do first, and keep everything else short.

  • Your name and photo, so a visitor knows they are in the right place.
  • One line about what you make. "Lo-fi producer, new EP out Friday" does more than a paragraph.
  • The action that matters this week, at the top: the new release, the stream schedule, the drop.
  • A short list of other links, in the order you want them tapped.
  • Your other profiles as a row of icons, so they take one line instead of eight.
  • A way to contact you for work, if you want that kind of message.

Some tools also let you add media: a music player, a video, a gallery, tour dates. On Noiz those go on pages below the card, so the links stay short and the rest is one scroll away. For page ideas by type of creator, see link in bio examples.

A link-in-bio page is a small website with one job: sending people on. A full website does more and asks more of you. Most creators start with the first and add the second when they need a blog, a store or a portfolio with many pages.

Some link-in-bio tools let you connect a domain you own on a paid plan. A Noiz page lives at noiz.bio/yourname.

Do you have to pay for one?

No. Almost every link-in-bio tool has a free plan, and a free plan covers the basics: a page, your links and your profile icons. What paid plans add varies: more design control, deeper analytics, removing the tool's branding, selling. Most charge monthly. Noiz Premium is €4.99 once, with no subscription.

How to set one up

  1. Pick a tool and claim your name. It becomes the address you will say out loud, so keep it short and the same as your handle elsewhere.
  2. Add your photo and one line about what you make.
  3. Add your links, most important first. Leave out anything nobody would miss.
  4. Add your other profiles as icons.
  5. Open the page on your phone. Most of your visitors will arrive from an app on a phone, so check it there.
  6. Paste the address into your bio: see the guides for Instagram and TikTok.

On Noiz, getting started walks through the same steps inside the dashboard.

Questions

Why do people say "link in bio"?
Because on Instagram a web address in a post caption is not clickable, so the only place to put a working link was the profile. "Link in bio" tells a viewer to go there.
How many links can I add to my Instagram bio?
Up to five, according to Instagram's help center. You add them in the app under Edit profile, then Links. The Instagram guide has the steps.
Can anyone add a link to a TikTok bio?
Not on every account. TikTok's help center says a general account needs at least 1,000 followers to post a website link, and a verified business account can post one. The TikTok guide covers both routes.
Is Linktree the same thing as a link in bio?
Linktree is one tool that makes link-in-bio pages. "Link in bio" is the general idea, and there are many tools for it. Linktree alternatives compared lays them out with their prices.
Can a link-in-bio page show up on Google?
Yes, if the tool lets search engines index it. A public page can appear when someone searches your name or handle. Noiz pages can be indexed once they have a link or a bio, and a switch in your settings keeps a page out of search results if you prefer.
